A New Year’s Rundown: What’s going on in New Orleans

New Year’s is usually an exciting holiday for everyone involved. It’s a chance to celebrate the ending of a great year with family and friends, as well as looking forward to a year ahead. In the New Orleans area, there are plenty of exciting events to take part in throughout the city, making for the perfect celebration with family and friends. Instead of staying at home for a party in a New Orleans apartment or home, get out and take in some of the exciting culture and celebration that will come together in the bayou this New Year’s eve.

Early festivities in New Orleans will be available down at Jackson Square. Live music and entertainment will be kicking off in the evening time. From there, the streets are likely to fill up quickly in advance of the dropping of the Baby Bacchus from the top of the Jax Brewery. At midnight, the celebration continues with an extravagant fireworks display right on the river. The area’s rules for last call will allow the celebration to go on nearly all night down on Bourbon Street.

The celebration in Jackson Square will include performances from Terrance Simien, the Zydeco Experience, James Andrews and the Crescent City All Stars to prepare the crowd for a night of celebration. Expect the celebration to be even more crowded than usual this year with the Sugar Bowl and National Championship taking place in New Orleans right after New Year’s Day.

Aside from the traditional New Year’s celebrations in Jackson Square and on Bourbon Street, many concert venues and clubs will offer individual events with great entertainment. Locations such as House of Blues, The Metropolitan and Irvin Mayfield’s will offer up a distinct opportunity to blend a New Year’s celebration along with a bevy of music performances and fun.

New Year’s Eve day will also offer some family friendly events in New Orleans. Locations such as the Audubon Zoo, The Aquarium of the Americas and the Louisiana Children’s Museum will hold activities and events open to the whole family.

The New Orleans area offers a supreme mixture of traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations along with the culture and background of the bayou. As previously mentioned, accommodations will be hard to come by at the last minute due to both bowl games taking place in the Super Dome this year. As the holiday season gets into full swing, be sure to make some great New Year’s plans in New Orleans this winter.

Mark Morris Dance Group
Mahalia Jackson Theater – October 22, 2011
The season kicks off when the spellbinding dancers of the Mark Morris Dance Group return to New Orleans for the first time since 2002.  The phenomenally gifted American dance icon Mark Morris celebrates 30 years of creating intensely musical, endlessly inventive and joyously exuberant dances. Hailed as the “Mozart of modern dance” (Washington Post), Morris spotlights his musical devotion by always touring with his own group of classical musicians. His long-awaited New Orleans return is no different, and his superb company brings a lush program of brand new dances and classic works set to live music.

Jacoby & Pronk Contemporary Dance Artists
NOCCA’s Freda Lupin Memorial Hall – November 11 and 12, 2011
NOBA and The NOCCA Institute are honored to present the New Orleans premiere of Jacoby & Pronk Contemporary Dance Artists. Two of today’s most extraordinary dancers, Drew Jacoby and Rubinald Pronk are internationally renowned for performing with such companies as the Dutch National Ballet, Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, and Alonzo King Lines Ballet. In 2008, this elite duo, known for razor-sharp technique, sensual chemistry and physical beauty, launched an exciting new dance project,
hand-picking international ballet stars and choreographers to join them in producing tailor-made evenings of contemporary ballet. Creating a sensation wherever they perform, Jacoby & Pronk are “breaking the ballet mold and giving it a whole new image,” raves Dance Magazine.

Shen Wei Dance Arts
Mahalia Jackson Theater – January 21, 2012
Hailed by the New York Times as “startlingly imaginative,” Shen Wei Dance Arts brings a fantastical world that vividly fuses East and West by incorporating Chinese opera, Eastern philosophy, traditional and contemporary art, and dance. Led by visionary choreographer, designer, and artist Shen Wei, who created part of the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the company is known for “gorgeous visual imagery” (London Times). The breathtaking and poetic program includes the haunting and otherworldly masterpiece Folding, along with his newest creation.

Stephen Petronio Company
NOCCA’s Freda Lupin Memorial Hall – March 2 & 3, 2012
NOBA once again partners with The NOCCA Institute to present Stephen Petronio Company. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Stephen Petronio is widely regarded as one of the leading dance-makers of his generation with an instantly recognizable style that combines fiercely kinetic movement with the most innovative collaborators from music, visual art, and fashion. His intrepid dancers move with whiplash speed and crystalline beauty. The program features Underland, a provocative work originally created for the Sydney Dance Company set to the dark, bitter-sweet songs of Australian rocker Nick Cave and City of Twist, an homage to New York City with an enigmatic commissioned score by performance art legend Laurie Anderson.

Complexions Contemporary Ballet
Mahalia Jackson Theater – April 21, 2012
Incomparable co-founders, choreographer Dwight Rhoden and superhuman dancer Desmond Richardson, bring their sleek, daredevil company back to New Orleans with the high-voltage Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Richardson, hailed by The New York Times as “one of the great modern dancers of his time,” will be retiring from the company as a dancer this season. As a special tribute, NOBA has commissioned Rhoden to create a new duet to live New Orleans jazz for Richardson and New York City Ballet Principal dancer Wendy Whelan. This event marks the first time these beloved American superstars have danced together in their illustrious careers.

The Joffrey Ballet
Mahalia Jackson Theater – May 12, 2012
For more than a half-century, The Joffrey Ballet has been an American ballet treasure. Last seen in New Orleans at Dixon Hall, this sensational company returns to close the main stage season in grand style. The elegant program highlights the bold and refreshing talents of rising choreographic star Edwaard Liang with Age of Innocence, an emotionally-charged new work inspired by the social complexities of life in the era of Jane Austen. Also on the program is Jerome Robbin’s enchanting romantic masterwork In the Night, a passionate ballet featuring a series of three pas de deux set to the live accompaniment of Chopin Nocturnes.

MANDEVILLE, THURSDAY, NOV. 4 — A.M.A. PRESENTS: “Move Over Television, Marketing is Moving to Your Phone”

The New Orleans Chapter of the American Marketing Association presents:

“Move Over Television, Marketing is Moving to Your Phone.”

SPEAKER: Neel Sus, CEO, Susco Solutions & Touch Studios

DESCRIPTION: Considering that most people would rather lose their wallet than misplace their cell phone, it’s fitting that the mobile world is quickly becoming a new hub for business. For many of us, our cell phone never leaves our side. It holds a place at the dinner table, is easily accessible in your bag’s front pocket, and often, somehow it even manages to end up sharing your pillow at night. Busy schedules mean people are often on the move and when marketers and companies can’t reach consumers at their computers, on TV, before the previews at the movies, with billboards, or magazine and newspaper ads, they must feel assured that they can still reach them on their cell phones.

To RSVP, register here or go to our blog at www.amaneworleans.com and find the link on the events page.

For those that do not RSVP, a $5 surcharge will be added to the event price at the door.

When:  Thursday, November 04, 2010  11:30 AM  -1:15 PM

Where:  N’Tini’s, 2891 Hwy. 190, Mandeville, LA 70471
