The Alliance for Good Government will celebrate its 43rd year of supporting good government in the New Orleans Metropolitan Area. The annual banquet will be held July 10th at 5:30 PM at the Grand Salon of the Hilton Hotel in New Orleans. The banquet will also honor the 2010 Legislator of the Year. The St. Tammany chapter of the Alliance will be participating and will honor their Legislator of the Year and Civic Award. For more information and ticket sales contact John Wells, St. Tammany chapter president 985-641-1855 or Tim Fandal 985-966-0644.
The Alliance for Good Government is a non-profit organization, which was registered and qualified to do business with the Secretary of State on December 13, 1967. Since then, the Alliance has operated, as an organization comprised of concerned citizens from all walks of life and political persuasions, who believe in good government for the citizens of the State of Louisiana. The membership consists of men and women, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. The St. Tammany chapter has been in existence since 1999.
The St. Tammany Chapter embraces the purpose of the Alliance for Good Government to create and maintain an active organization of public-minded citizens and to use the intelligence and influence of its members to invoke legal means and personal persuasion to start legislation encouraging good government and to use the intelligence and influence of citizens to actively engage in the promotion and election of public officials who are dedicated to the common good, efficient government, and integrity. To inform and aid all citizens interested in effective and efficient government in the selection and election of candidates for public office and to generally promote a high standard of intelligence, honesty, independence, and imagination in the electorate.
To foster good government, the St. Tammany Chapter of the Alliance invites candidates to forums which are open to the general public, in which the candidates are asked a variety of questions regarding their positions on political issues and philosophy. The candidates are also allowed to speak directly to the audience at the beginning and conclusion of the forum. A confidential session of the executive membership selects a candidate for the Alliance’s endorsement. The Alliance does not merely endorse a candidate but also, it campaigns for that candidate by printing ballots and distributing them to the general public. Television and newspaper advertisements are also run on a pro-rata share basis throughout the campaign. Through the endorsement process, the Alliance seeks to inform and assist the electorate in electing public officials with integrity to serve all factions of the community. There will be forums held in St. Tammany Parish in the fall for the school board, US Senate, and US Representative elections.
In addition to the forums, the St. Tammany Chapter of the Alliance holds monthly meetings in which, organizational matters are discussed and public officials are invited to discuss issues of importance to the membership. The organization is funded from dues of its members and, an annual banquet, and various fund raising activities. Any member can be employed by the federal, state, or city government. Any member who intends to run for an elected office (other than Parish or State Committeeman) must resign before qualifying for that office, and if said person is elected, this person can no longer be a member of the Alliance for Good Government. If they are not elected, they may be reinstated as a member. To learn more about the Alliance go to: www.allianceforgoodgovernment.org

Lt. Gen. Robert Van Antwerp
Commanding General
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
441 G Street, NW
Washington, DC 20314-1000
Re: Barrier Island Defense: A Plan of Action to Protect from Disaster
Dear Lieutenant General Van Antwerp:
The Coastal Conservation Association Louisiana is urging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to approve Louisiana’s proposed dredging project immediately to ameliorate damages to our coastal areas which are being destroyed by the BP oil spill. Our coastal areas are in the midst of an environmental crisis unlike any ever experienced in the United States. A crisis of this magnitude requires emergency action, and we must not allow bureaucratic procedures to delay the implementation of remedies that have the potential of lessening the damage to our marshes, beaches and other fragile coastal areas.
CCA Louisiana is the state’s largest volunteer organization dedicated to marine conservation and coastal stewardship. Our membership is made up almost entirely of recreational fishermen who recognize the importance of conservation and have embraced their role as stewards of our shared marine resources. On behalf of our entire membership, I respectfully request that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers work as partners with Louisiana authorities to find solutions to the unprecedented
challenges presented by the oil spill.
It is our understanding that the Corps’ approval of the dredging project is required so that equipment
can be mobilized to start building the necessary sand barriers. CCA Louisiana urges that authorization to proceed with this project be given without delay.
Sincerely,
David A. Cresson
Executive Director/CEO
